ImAc contributes to ITU Study Group 16

As the Lead Study Group on Ubiquity and on Multimedia Terminals, Systems and Applications, the ITU-T SG 16 effort in standardizing accessibility promotes the concept of Total Conversation and aims to ensure that all sectors of the global community have equal access to communications and online information. This effort is centred in Question 26/16 “Accessibility to Multimedia Systems and Services”, which continues the ITU-T international standardization work on accessibility, that was pioneered in the 1990s with V.18 (an ITU-T Recommendation on a multi-function text telephone).

On 17^th October 2019 Dr Orero from UAB presented ImAc’s contribution on Sign language interpretation in immersive environments. Sign Language is one of the three mainstreamed media accessibility services. Within the EU funded project, ImAc subtitles, audio description and sign language interpretation have been studied to incorporate into immersive environments, particularly 360 º video content that will be broadcasted. ImAc attempts to avoid the proliferation of isolated and closed add-on solutions, by designing and deploying a standard-compliant end-to-end system that encompasses all stages from media authoring to media consumption. The project has adopted a user-centric methodology where end-users, professionals and stakeholders are involved at every stage of the project through the organization of workshops, focus groups, tests, and by attending events. This elicits a bottom up approach to determining the accessibility, interaction and personalization requirements.
