IMAC at Languages & The Media 2018

Immersive Accessibility (ImAc) project funded by the European Union’s Research and Innovation programme Horizon 2020 was presented at this year’s Languages & The Media conference in Berlin (October 3-5th 2018).

The theme of this year’s Languages & The Media was “The Fourth Industrial Revolution – Reshaping Languages in the Media”. The conference examined various developments, innovations and changes that are setting the framework for the future of audiovisual media industry and the role of the languages in it.

The project was presented as part of two sessions: “Immersive Environments” and “Speed Presentations” on the 5th October 2018.

The 20-minute presentation in “Immersive Environments” session, with a title “SDH in Immersive Environments: Can Subtitles Be Immersive at All?” was given by Belén Agulló García from Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, Spain.

This presentation discussed the nature of immersive contents and explained the challenges for implementing the subtitles of the deaf and hard-of-hearing (SDH) in 360° videos.

The 5-minute poster presentation, given in “Speed Presentations” session, was presented by Anita Fidyka from Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, Spain. Its title was “Audio Description in 360° Videos: The Question of Storytelling”.

The presentation discussed the changes in the narrative in 360° content and presented the resulting implications for the production of audio description in this medium.

After each of the presentations, conference attendees approached the members of our team to show their interest in the ImAc activities and ask additional questions.
